Slow Yoga
Mix of Yin Yoga and Yoga Nidra
Yin Yoga
Yin yoga is rapidly gaining popularity in the Netherlands. The postures you adopt in this form of yoga are mainly aimed at strengthening and relaxing connective tissue and joints; they stretch deeper muscles and loosen up the pelvic area. Initially, the postures are intended to allow you to meditate longer in the Lotus position, but it is especially nice exercise for those who have a sedentary profession. In Yin yoga, positions are held for longer, so you have more time to explore and push your limits. You don’t use your body to get into a posture, but you use the posture to make your body feel better. It is therefore the relatively calm nature of a Yin yoga class that appeals to most participants. The class is so nice because you don’t have to move very intensively, but you can take the time for your body.
Yoga Nidra
The yoga of sleep. Your body enters the state of sleep (nidra), but your mind remains clear and awake. This form of yoga originates from the tantric tradition. Around 1950, Swami Satyananda Saraswati developed the form as we know it. During a Yoga Nidra session, a voice guides you through different phases. It is not the intention that you come up with these steps yourself, because you must be able to completely relax. That won’t work if you’re working on whatever the next step in your practice is. Besides deep relaxation, Yoga Nidra also aims to clear your subconscious of deep-seated stress and thus achieve samadhi. But before you get there, Yoga Nidra already does many other nice things for you. It helps you sleep better and deeper, is good for your concentration, gives more rest, creativity and energy and strengthens your immune system. In addition, yoga nidra helps against fears, depression, burnout, and even against high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. x
